Melbourne Rumour

A rumour floating around that Melbourne are about lose points due to playing an unregistered player appear to be unfounded. The player in question, David Ellis, down from Sydney, played his first two weeks as a sub in the bottom side with the Prince of Leaders, Chuck, and when registered, played a game in Divvy one with Macca and is now in the top side.

Moonee Magoos

I don’t think Geoff Mather’s assessment of the fate of Money Ponds is justified. Although losing such quality players as Graeme Bridge and Nathan Bush, who has just rejoined the State side, but picking up Brett Spurr, Brent Petrie, Colin Doolan, Phil Schofield and Mike Fleming (all from Darebin), it is taking a little time to sort out their rink combinations and I feel they will come home with a wet sail.
Money Pond’s Magoos, though, is a juggernaut powering towards Divvy One.

Bombers On Recovery

Trying to sort out the right rink combinations in the Premier side has been a confronting issue for Essendon’s sole top side selector Dave Donaldson. But it appears he has finally got it right. The volume of players arriving on the Bomber’s doorstep with their elevation to Premier certainly brought its own headaches, but in what already appears to be a year where they will consolidate their spot in Premier Division, this in itself will feed their sides in the lower divisions.

Tankers - The Spankers

Bundoora’s red bottoms will be shining at night, and not a Lee Schraner in sight! Glen Eira/ McKinnon carry on their winning ways after belting Moonee and have continued their form ever since. Michael Wilks is in scintillating form - his shot play is incredible! Wilksy ripped State rep Galloway a new one a few weeks ago, and with eight shots up belted Bundoora’s Barca in round four.

This should show all the old cronies on the committee at the Tanks that their support of the top side is warranted. They are my tip for the flag this year.

Tiger Resigns

Lachlan Tighe has resigned as the State coach of the Victorian Ladies, citing he is “tired of trying to push shit up hill”, despite enjoying the role and the association with the women that actually play in the squad.

It appears that the Bowls Australia high performance team is unwilling to share their approaches with the State squads, causing a ‘them and us’ mentality.

I reckon the worst thing that has happened to bowls in Australia is the reduction of the national coaching and management team and their attempts at trying to create a team of robotic performers - particularly when flair and style are what is needed to keep the public interested. Do you think Schuback and Curtis would have made the grade back in their day if all this high performance twaddle were imposed on them? I think not!

Lalor Needs New Blood

After consolidating so well last year, Lalor appear to be on a slippery slope back to Divvy 1 with two zeros, not one rink up in the third and fourth rounds. How worried is JR at the moment? I have a lot of time for the blokes at this club and I hope that they can recover in time to stave off relegation, as I believe both Altona and Moonee Ponds will climb the ladder.

Bundoora – Hero to Zero

What’s up boyths? No side without Leeroy eh? Hardly surprising though, without the dubious crutch of an illegal synthetic surface, this side will be the Premier yo yo. Watch this space. I have heard that a number of clubs have already refused to sign timing sheets and have reported the green pace to the RVBA Greens Committee, but it appears they are still using this very suspect surface.

Poor Old Darebin

Equal to Bundoora’s dubious surface is the lack of pace and preparation that is being afforded to Darebin City’s greens, an unfortunate state of affairs for our supposed International bowls venue. A great bunch of blokes are in the sides at Darebin but it appears that the lack of support that they are getting from the local council, who stuffed the scrutinising of the contractors that laid their greens, is holding them back. Less than ten seconds is just not good enough!
Next Month

In December I am going to start a series for the beginner, taking you through all the various terminology and equipment one would need if one was to take up the glorious game of lawn bowls
