A fowl tale

Ducking for cover By Fabrizio Marsani

We’ve got some new additions to the backyard farm. And aren’t they cute? But I don’t know if the established residents- the chickens- appreciate their new neighbours. They’re probably thinking, “more beaks to feed, which means less food for us”!

Occasionally, when one of the hens (who has never experienced being a mother hen) gets a little too close to our mother duck and her ducklings, she finds herself on the receiving end of the mother duck’s swift and protective strike.

I think she’s teaching them a valuable lesson: don’t come between a mother and her babies or you’ll cop a chop.

Our hens are coming to the conclusion that worms don’t bite back but protective mother ducks do, and that it’s best to stick to what you know best. In their case, it’s scratching about and digging up worms!
