Emerging artists break through the barriers

The exhibition ‘Resonance’ represents a collaboration of artists from country Victoria, Melbourne and bayside who have found a way to break through the restrictive barriers that face artists wanting to exhibit their work.

Artist and Public Art Co-ordinator Natalie Evans returned to Melbourne from rural Victoria and completed a Visual Arts Diploma. When enquiring about the hire of gallery space she found costs were prohibitive for herself and other emerging artists. The solution was a combination of artists, students, friends and friends of friends sharing the costs to make it financially feasible. The numerous roles involved in presenting the shows have also been shared among the group.

Natalie Evans, Paul Chandler, Laurie Harvey, Sharon Symss, Jan Martin and Deidre Spencer-Fletcher make up the group. This is the second show they have held this year, the first being ‘Likeminded’ held at Orbost in April. Each has taken the opportunity to exhibit their work whether they are just starting out or have many years teaching and exhibiting behind them.

The overall show is diverse though the members of the group share a common approach and philosophy. Some of the subjects are similar, yet each artist has their own interpretation. All the work has its own vibrancy, incorporating beautiful textures with fearless use of colour. Here is something refreshing. Be prepared to be moved and inspired by this group and their work.

Dream and reality

Local artist Josef Edelman is holding an exhibition of recent and not so recent works at the St Kilda Town Hall throughout June. Joseph’s work includes portraits, landscapes, fantasies, musicians and memories from childhood. The new exhibition is called Dream and Reality and reflects Josef’s long career as an artist and the influences made on his work by dreams, mosaic and stained glass windows and reality from life.

Dream and reality will be shown at The St Kilda Town Hall 3rd to 25th June, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm; Sunday 8th & 15th June from 1pm to 5pm. Entrance is free and all works are for sale.
