Karate
has become a family sport. That’s right, at Go-Kan-Ryu Karate,
mothers and fathers are training with their sons and daughters.
In an age where obesity is a growing problem and parents don’t feel
safe sending their children out to play, what could be better than
Karate lessons?
Wrench the whole family away from the TV or computer and get down to
your local GKR Karate Club.
In fact 50% of participants at GKR Karate are female, which is quite
a change from the bad old image of high-testosterone males looking
for fights. Karate is essentially a defensive martial art.
At GKR Karate non-contact karate is taught, a traditional Japanese
style based around blocks, strikes and kicks called Karate Do. In
Japanese, Go = hard, Kan = total or complete and Ryu = school
There are many reasons why people take karate lessons. The most
obvious is to defend them selves if confronted or attacked in the
street. But there are many other benefits. |
The discipline of an activity such as karate is very
good for any person, be they young or old. Karate improves fitness,
flexibility, strength, co-ordination, mobility and self-confidence.
It is amazing how much safer you feel when you know that you are
physically in control. And it doesn’t matter how old you are or how
poor your state of health. Be you five or seventy-five, there is a
level of karate suitable for you.
In fact, karate is an excellent form of physical therapy for the
frail, the elderly or anyone coming back from injury or ill health.
Classes are 1hr and 1½ hrs. Because children’s concentration span is
shorter, they are allowed to leave the class after one hour while
the adults keep training.
GKR Karate was founded in Adelaide in 1984. It has grown into an
international club with over 55 thousand members, world wide, and
the very best instructors with 23 classes in the local area.
Special classes and seminars are held periodically. There are
regular tournaments for those who would like to test their skill in
kata and/or kumite. |
